Phosphor 3

Audio Damage

Phosphor 3 is a polyphonic software synthesizer modeled on the alphaSyntauri hardware synthesizer, using additive synthesis with wavetable oscillators built from up to 64 partials. It combines two identical voices with independent envelope generators, LFOs with graphical waveform control, and a stereo delay with filters to create complex, evolving timbres from simple additive components. The plugin captures the character of 1979-era digital synthesis while adding modern features like MPE support, tempo-synced modulation, and non-equal-tempered tuning via TUN files.

Key Features

01Two wavetable oscillators with 16, 32, or 64 partials per oscillator
02Independent ADSR envelope generators with adjustable segment curvature
03Cross-modulation (FM synthesis) between oscillators
04Two independent LFOs per note with sine, triangle, rectangle, and random waveforms
05Stereo delay with feedback and cross-channel feedback routing
06Low-pass and high-pass filters in series after delay lines
07Extensive modulation routing from LFOs, MIDI controllers, velocity, aftertouch, and triggered random
08MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) support with per-note LFO and pressure/pitch bend/position data

Things to Try

  • 01Use the sawtooth, triangle, or square waveform buttons to initialize oscillators, then adjust individual partials for unique timbres
  • 02Set one oscillator as modulator by reducing its Level slider to zero while routing its output via Cross Mod to hear FM tones without the carrier being masked
  • 03Modulate the Pan slider with LFO1 to create stereo movement, or invert the modulation amount to negative for opposite-direction panning in a chord
  • 04Drag the delay filter control downward to narrow the passband, then move it left and right to sweep a frequency band through the delayed signal
