Reason Studios

Layers is a quad-layer sample player Rack Extension designed for creating complex, layered sounds from multi-sampled instruments in a straightforward manner. Each of four sound engines can hold a different sampled instrument and can be individually filtered, distorted, and flanged before mixing together. With built-in global delay, reverb, and compression effects plus an integrated trig sequencer for rhythmic animation, Layers excels at building massive, evolving sounds from classic 80s/90s analog synthesizer samples.

Things to Try

  • 01Activate Trig Delay on individual sound engines with different TD TIME values (1/64 to 2/4 steps) to create sequential, cascading introductions of layers
  • 02Use Keyboard Track (KBD) in the Filter section set to 100% to make filter cutoff track incoming MIDI notes for responsive, pitch-dependent filtering across layers
  • 03Combine polyphonic LFO1 with amplitude modulation in the Amp section using the LFO1 knob to create tremolo effects that respond individually to each played note
  • 04Set the Trig Sequencer to STEP mode and enable different step counts (1-16) for each layer to generate poly-rhythmic patterns that evolve with every new note
