Polytone

Reason Studios

Polytone is a dual-layer analog-inspired polyphonic synthesizer that delivers warm, classic poly synth sounds with modern twists. Each of its two layers features oscillators with waveshaping, unique noise varieties, and independent filter, envelope, and LFO controls. Distinctive for its layer stacking and morphing capabilities, Polytone creates both fat blended sounds and complex evolving tones by continuously interpolating parameters between layers.

Key Features

01Two independent layers with separate oscillator, filter, envelope, and LFO controls
02Layer mixing and morphing modes (Single, Mix, Morph) with multiple control sources (Mod Wheel, Velocity, Global LFO, Fader)
036 oscillator waveforms (Saw-Pulse, Pulse, Triangle, Sine, Digital wavetables, Band Noise) with Shape modulation
04Oscillator 2 chaos mode for layered textures and tonal variety
05State variable filter with continuous morphing between 5 filter types (24 dB LP, 12 dB LP, 12 dB BP, 12 dB HP, 24 dB HP)
06Oscillator sync and frequency modulation (FM) capabilities with Mod Wheel control
07Polyphonic playback up to 20 voices with Poly, Retrig, and Legato key modes
08Age control simulating analog component degradation with pitch and filter fluctuations

Things to Try

  • 01Modulate oscillator pitch or shape counter-clockwise from 12 o'clock on the Pitch Mod and Shape Mod knobs to introduce LFO modulation
  • 02Use the Mod Wheel with LFO Depth set to maximum to gradually introduce modulation on parameters set in the 'LFO range' (counter-clockwise from 12 o'clock)
  • 03Set Mix mode with Mod Wheel control and move the wheel to fade between two layers configured with different filter cutoff frequencies for dynamic tonal variation
  • 04Enable Osc Sync and modulate Oscillator 1 pitch (via Pitch Mod with LFO) while listening to Oscillator 1 to get the characteristic sync sweep sound
