MidiGate

Steinberg

MidiGate is a MIDI-triggered gate plugin that silences audio signals until activated by MIDI note events rather than threshold levels. Unlike traditional gates that respond to signal amplitude, MidiGate requires both audio and MIDI data, opening and closing based on note-on/note-off messages with precise envelope control. It's distinctive for its velocity-responsive parameters and flexible hold mode options that adapt gating behavior to different performance styles.

Key Features

01MIDI-triggered gating instead of threshold-based
02Attack range 0-500ms with Note To Attack modulation
03Release range 0-3000ms with Note To Release modulation
04Hold Mode with Note On and Note Off options
05Velocity To VCA control for dynamic output shaping
06Note velocity affects attack and release times independently

Things to Try

  • 01Use Hold Mode set to Note On for fixed-duration gating regardless of MIDI note length
  • 02Use Hold Mode set to Note Off to gate for the duration of played MIDI notes, then apply Release after note-off
  • 03Set Note To Velocity at 127 to have volume controlled entirely by MIDI note velocities
  • 04Increase Note To Attack with high velocities to add velocity-dependent attack delay, or use negative values to shorten attack on higher velocities
