Sculpture

Apple

Sculpture is a physical modeling synthesizer that generates sounds by simulating the vibrating properties of acoustic instruments. It models components like string material, length, tension, and playing techniques (bowing, plucking, striking) to create rich, organic tones ranging from realistic instrument emulations to otherworldly hybrid sounds. Unlike traditional synthesis, Sculpture's strings interact dynamically with retriggered notes, producing warm pads, deep basses, and evolving textures with an acoustic quality.

Key Features

01Component modeling synthesis simulating vibrating strings with adjustable material, tension, and stiffness
02Three excite/disturb/damp objects (pluck, bow, strike, blow, noise, external input) for string stimulation
03Two movable pickups with independent positioning and phase inversion control
04Material Pad interface controlling stiffness and inner loss with keyscale and release modes
05Multimode filter, waveshaper, and amplitude envelope (ADSR) per voice
06Body EQ module simulating instrument resonance and integrated delay effect
07Up to 16 voices polyphonic, monophonic, and legato keyboard modes with glide/portamento
08Five morph points for smooth or abrupt parameter transitions with recordable envelopes
09Modulation sources including tempo-synced LFOs, jitter generators, and recordable envelopes

Things to Try

  • 01Drag the Material Pad ball to combine stiffness and inner loss for different tonal characters: low stiffness with low inner loss for metallic sounds, or high stiffness with high inner loss for wood-like materials
  • 02In Keyscale view, adjust the green and blue lines to control how string properties scale across the keyboard range, creating sweeter bass notes and inharmonic treble overtones
  • 03Modulate object positions with an LFO to create animated width and chorus effects on the string stimulation
  • 04Use the Release button to increase Media Loss above 1.0 to simulate dropping a vibrating string into water after initially vibrating in air
