Continua

Audio Damage

Continua is a three-oscillator subtractive synthesizer that embraces continuous sound evolution through a 'morph everything' design philosophy. It goes beyond traditional synthesis with oscillators and filters that smoothly morph between standard responses, multi-point flexible envelope generators, and nearly universal modulation routing. Built for both MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) and traditional controllers, Continua delivers analog-inspired synthesis with digital flexibility, finished with stereo chorus, delay, and reverb effects.

Key Features

01Three oscillators with continuously variable wave shapes and FM modulation between oscillators
02Two filters with morphing between low-pass, band-pass, high-pass, and notch responses
03Two ADSR envelope generators with curvature controls for exponential, linear, and logarithmic movement
04Two flexible multi-point envelope generators (FEGs) with arbitrary breakpoints and three looping modes
05Four flexible low-frequency oscillators (FLFOs) with continuously variable shapes
06Sample and hold modulator with adjustable smoothing and rate limiting
07Almost all parameters support modulation from up to five sources simultaneously
08Stereo chorus, dual delay, and stereo reverb effects with modulation support on selected parameters
0915-voice polyphony with unison mode
10MPE-aware and legacy MIDI controller support with velocity, aftertouch, pitch bend, and CC mapping

Things to Try

  • 01Start FM exploration by leaving oscillator Shape knobs at center, setting Warp and Skew to zero, turning off Filter switches for Oscillators 2 and 3, then increasing the Osc2 FM knob to hear brightness increase, then experiment with Oscillator 2's Transpose control at +12
  • 02Add interesting attack transients by setting an envelope generator to a short blip and routing it to one or both FM knobs
  • 03Route a very small amount of the random source to oscillator fine-tuning controls and filter frequencies to reproduce the natural detuning variation of analog hardware
  • 04Create click-free FEG loops by either setting both loop points to the same level or using bidirectional looping mode instead of forward looping
